In memoriam Adam Robinson, Helen Sharp, Emma and Charlie

Principled Business is heartbroken by the loss of Adam Robinson. He died on Sunday, November 1, in the plane crash near Greenacres, Florida. With him were his wife, Helen Sharp, their children Emma and Charlie, their friends Rachael Reed and Charmi Fehr, and Anita Maria Cetina, who cared for the children. The flight's crew, Jeff Gregory and Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, were also lost.

Adam was one of the original early members of Principled Business. He was part of our community from the beginning and took part in many of our gatherings, including our annual retreat on Necker Island. Those of us who spent time with him there and at our other events will remember a builder who believed in what business can do for people, and who showed up for this community time and again.

Our hearts are with the Robinson and Sharp families, and with the families and friends of everyone aboard. We are grateful for the time we had with Adam, and we will miss him deeply.

Emma was 4 and Charlie was 2.

Adam was one of us. He was an Austin entrepreneur who founded RB2B and Retention.com. He was a builder who loved sharing what he'd learned about starting companies. We all remember Adam as a fun, energetic, free-spirited friend. In Principled Business he was always willing to help others, and he was constantly positive and optimistic.

His family said it best: Adam and Helen's "warmth, generosity and gift for making people feel welcome touched so many lives." We saw that in him.

To Adam's and Helen's families, and to everyone who loved them: we are so sorry. Our whole community is holding you close, and we respect your request for privacy.

Adam's Lessons for Principled Business Leaders

Adam shared his advice freely. Here is some of it, for PB leaders to carry on.

    Writings

    • My startup hiring philosophy

Adam's most widely shared idea. Hire people who would make great founders but don't want the risk, give them real ownership, and then trust them and stay out of their way.

    • Startups don't need to maximize predictable revenue

Adam argued that most startups chase predictable revenue too early. He put speed of sales and profit first, warming buyers through the founder's brand, content and small events.

    • Bootstrapping $0 to $1M ARR twice

Lessons from building two companies without outside money. Spend as little as possible, treat product-market fit as everything, learn marketing yourself, hire slowly, fire quickly, and work with people you trust.

    • Bootstrapping RB2B to $5M ARR in 13 months with 5 people

How a tiny team grew so fast. Confirm demand before you build, launch something different even if it's rough, build awareness on social, and stay profitable.

    • What I'd tell any founder starting today

Adam's advice to new founders, starting with building your own audience. He credited growing from 4,000 to 140,000 LinkedIn followers for how fast RB2B took off.

If you knew Adam and would like to share a memory, we would be grateful to receive it. With their families' permission, we'll make sure your words reach them.
